Skipton to Carlisle 1920

 |
This is an fictitious freeware add-on route for the Microsoft Train Simulator, covering the Skipton to Carlisle portion of the St Pancras to Carlisle Midland Railway main line during the latter part of that companies existence up to grouping in 1923. The route originally was the default Europe 1, Settle route, which I later issued as a the freeware S&C 1930. Now in its present extended form it covers the area from Skipton in the south, Hawes Joint MR and NER station in the east to Carlisle Citadel station in the north.

The route has attempted to give a steam age atmosphere and is bases on the early 1900's MR track plans, which have been followed where possible. There are 26 stations and various private owner sidings for quarries, lime works, brick works and railway owned works plus lay by sidings. Although a number of the original Microsoft/Kuju items are still in use, the vast majority have been replaced by the excellent work of the late Malcolm Roper, to whom I have dedicated the route, because of Malcolm's efforts over the last year he was with us, he made this route possible.

The Skipton route has 26 stations, starting at Skipton in the south and ending at Carlisle Citadel in the north with Hawes joint station in the east. The stations follow the originals as closely as possible, giving a true Little North Western and S&C feel to a journey over the route. Private works, brickworks, alabaster and lime works, quarries, plus company lay by sidings, such as Ais Gill and Mallerstang are scattered over the length of the route. Track plans worked to were of the latter years of the MR mainly the 1912 - 1913 period. MR lower quadrant signals are used throughout the route, admittedly incorrect for the Carlisle station area, be aware that the MR used the same colours and signal lamp spectacles for the home and distant signals. An attempt has been made to make night driving slightly easier, signal box interiors and name boards are illuminated, a number of line side buildings also have interior lighting and same areas of certain stations are lit.
