Description : How do you heat ETH-only equipped MkIII sleeper stock on the last leg of its journey to Fort William when you only have steam-heat equipped Class 37 locomotives to haul it? In the early 1980's, BR came up with the rather eccentric stop-gap solution of converting three former Class 25 locomotives into non-self-propelled electric heat generators, 25310, 25305 and 25314 becoming ADB97250 ETHEL1, 97251 ETHEL2 and 97252 ETHEL3 respectively. Even if you don't have the Mk.III sleepers from the Steam-acquired Class 67, you can still get some mileage out of these reskins. Although first used on Scottish sleeper services between 1983 and 1986, the ETHEL's later went on to enjoy a second career aggravating enthusiasts everywhere by being marshalled into steam excursions south of the border. So go on, stick ETHEL1 behind an A4 or Flying Scotsman on the WCML and annoy all those virtual lineside photographers - you know you want to really! Uploaded with permission from DT.
