Description:British Rail Class 210 DEMU v4.0
---------------------

The Class 210 prototype diesel-electric multiple units were built by BREL Derby in 1981, and
two units have been built. Set 210001 was a four car outer-suburban unit, with first and second
class seating, toilets and a luggage van, and set 210002 was a three car inner-suburban unit with
high-density second class seating only.

The units were very similar to the Class 317/1 EMUs, except half of the forward carriage was
taken up by the engine room inside each power car.

The units were operated on trial in various parts of the country, as did on prototype railbuses.
The class was intended to be a modern replacement for the ageing first generation types on
the Southern Region, but did not manage to secure production for the class.

The Class 210 units operated passenger services out of London Paddington to Slough, Reading
and Oxford between 1983 and 1987.

In the end they were judged too complex and the Class 210 units were withdrawn in the late
1980s. Their remit was filled by the Class 150 family of Sprinter units.

The driving and open second trailers from both units were later converted to Class 457 electric
multiple unit in 1989 for testing out the technical arrangements for the Networker units. The
unit was eventually withdrawn in 1991.

One vehicle, no. 67400, is still in service in one of Class 455/9 units, replacing a damaged
original Trailer Second Open vehicle.
