|Description||:||The National Railway Museum (NRM) has teamed up with RailSimulator.com to produce a unique virtual Flying Scotsman driving experience for home PCs – and best of all, it’s completely FREE!
The iconic Flying Scotsman steam locomotive, currently undergoing extensive restoration in the NRM workshop, is the star of this unique free-to-download ultra realistic videogame in which players take control of the iconic locomotive and drive through a beautiful winter landscape to deliver Christmas parcels.
Bob Gwynne at the NRM, said: “Thanks to close collaboration between the NRM and RailSimulator.com, the game is an incredibly accurate simulation in which the finest details of Flying Scotsman, including the cab and controls, are realistically recreated to make the driving experience close to the real thing. This is the first time it’s ever been possible to access an icon from the National Collection from the comfort of your own home, and the best part is you can download this game completely free of charge!”
As the driver, players must follow the signals and speed limits just like a real train driver, while getting safely to the destination amongst the snowy mountains to complete the goal. The software used to make the game is the end result of 3 million pounds of investment and development by videogame publisher RailSimulator.com, all of which has resulted in a hugely enjoyable and realistic Flying Scotsman driving experience.
Thanks to the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Tata Steel Europe, formerly Corus, amongst other organisations, and donors to the Steam Our Scotsman Appeal, Flying Scotsman is due to make a magnificent return in 2011. The Steam Our Scotsman Appeal is only £50,000 away from meeting its goal of £250,000, so any fans of No.4472 who are keen to support her return to steam should visit www.flyingscotsman.org.uk to donate.
The first time the public will be able to see Flying Scotsman on display in the National Railway Museum’s Great Hall will be 28-30 May 2011. Plans are yet to be finalised for this special celebratory event but visitors can expect a range of activities, workshops, talks and tours for the whole family to enjoy. More details will be made available at the official Flying Scotsman website www.flyingscotsman.org.uk in the coming months. Scotsman fans can also sign up to the National Railway Museum e-newsletter for the latest news on their favourite locomotive.
