|Description||:||London Overground Class 378/1 "378135" v2.0
Class 378 Capitalstar were built by Bombardier Transportation of Derby, introduced for
the London Overground network in 2009. The 378s are based on the Class 376 units
used by SouthEastern with the same wider metro-style sliding doors. The units have
fully longitudinal seating similar to that used on London Underground stock to give
more standing room.
The deal between Bombardier and Transport for London was initially for a total of
44 trainsets, which eventually extended to 57 trainsets. The first Class 378 unit
entered passenger service on 29th July 2009.
The first units were the 24 three-car Class 378/0 dual voltage units, which runs on
25kv AC overhead or 750v DC third rail. The units replaced the Class 313s, and runs
on North London and Watford DC lines. All 24 Class 378/0 units were renumbered
to Class 378/2 in 2010-11 when an additional carriage was added.
In 2010, 20 four-car Class 378/1 units for the extended East London Line followed.
The units were 750v DC third rail only. The East London Line was refurbished and
extended between 2007 and 2010 to become part of the London Overground
Class 378/2 dual voltage four-car units were also followed in 2010, consisting of 13
additional units, plus 24 modified from Class 378/0 three car sets. This totals the
Class 378/2 units to 37.
In 2014-15, 57 additional carriages were built to lengthen the entire Class 378 fleet
from four to five cars.
